An ideal destination for nature lovers

Nature and Activities

Lunigiana is one of the most fascinating areas of Tuscany for those who love nature and outdoor activities. The landscape is characterized by a wide variety of environments: mountains, chestnut forests, crystal-clear streams, small natural lakes, and panoramic views that, on clear days, stretch all the way to the sea.

The area lies between two important natural parks: the Apuan Alps Regional Park and the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines National Park. These protected areas preserve extraordinary biodiversity and offer hundreds of kilometers of hiking trails.

Trekking enthusiasts will find routes suitable for all levels, from easy walks through the woods to more challenging hikes on the peaks of the Apuan Alps. Some itineraries pass through ancient villages, centuries-old chestnut groves, and viewpoints that suddenly open onto the Magra Valley.

Streams, small lakes, and natural waterfalls

One of the most fascinating aspects of Lunigiana is the presence of numerous waterways that cross the valley. The Magra River and its tributaries form small canyons, waterfalls, and natural pools where, especially in summer, it is possible to swim in clear, refreshing waters.

Among the most evocative places are the Stretti di Giaredo, spectacular gorges carved by the Gordana stream. Here, the water has shaped the rocks, creating natural corridors and small beaches of white pebbles.

Also popular are the areas along the streams near Bagnone, Pontremoli, and Filattiera, where nature has created ideal settings for a day outdoors.

Outdoor activities all year round

Lunigiana is a perfect destination for those who enjoy sports and being in contact with nature.

In addition to trekking, it is possible to enjoy:

  • mountain biking along mountain trails
  • road cycling through hills and medieval villages
  • horseback riding along trails immersed in the woods
  • rock climbing in the rocky areas of the Apuan Alps

During winter, several Apennine ski resorts can be reached in a short time, ideal for alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing, such as:

  • Zum Zeri
  • Cerreto Laghi
  • Prato Spilla
